Public Access Kiosk Security: follow-up
As it stands, all systems that have been “frozen” with deep freeze⢠by Faronics⢠have sustained reliability. By having set the hard drive in a perpetual state of Read-only permissions, the system has become impervious to malware. When ever a malicious instance has occurred, rebooting the system resolved any problems. Minimal disk cleanup and defragmentation is needed due to the fact that no data has been retained. Furthermore, disk storage consumption has been kept to a minimum.
Interestingly, the most important aspect of using an unchanging disk image is determining how to handle system and/or software updates. When the system is “frozen,” no Operating System or Software updates are assimilated. No Changes are saved. In order to accommodate for updates, the hard drive must be “unfrozen.” Once the hard drive has been “unfrozen” potential disaster and compromisation of system integrity could occur if not handled correctly. Another approach to the updates issue is to avoid all system and software updates altogether. Disable all updates at the Operating System level and Software application level. In doing this, the system is stagnant and will avoid future updates/upgrades. BE CAUTIOUS! Usually updates are a good thing. By removing updates, the systems will eventually fall behind the technology trends.
In all, using Deep Freeze™ has helped accommodate system stability to public access kiosks. Especially in a public realm, accountability and reliability is of utmost importance even at the expense of updates and upgrades.
