Font Challenges
Web safe fonts - Ughhh! I am a graphic designer morphing into a web designer. And, probably like many others in similar situations, I already face the challenge of creating aesthetically pleasing work while fighting with the restrictions and limitations of the world wide web. So, when I started realizing how restrictive the web safe fonts are, and yet how important it is to use web safe fonts via html text for SEO purposes, I wanted to hit somebody – usually the IT department who was explaining all of this to me. Grrrrr. (just kidding IT) See, it’s just so easy in the print world. Design it. Print it. Presto! (OK, so it’s not always that easy, but you get the point)
The challenge is, of course, part of the fun. It makes us better designers, and success in the face of these challenges is particularly gratifying. So, I will continue to look for creative ways to incorporate compelling typography in web design while staying within the “rules”; meanwhile, I anxiously await for that new magical technology that will allow me to once again take advantage of my full font list… oh, how I miss you Garamond!
